Mr. Astemborski:

I just got off the phone with long time Alma-resident and underground miner Dean Misantoni. We are both mountain people who have lived, worked, and invested our life in the local mountain community. Though it is unfortunate that the general public is uneducated about the origin of their stuff and their abilities to drive on a system of safe, paved roads in powerful glossy SUVs with bike racks and On-Star aboard, I have to have faith that there are people who know better -- people who understand that mining is an industry that supports our lifestyle. We need some mechanism to enlighten the poor souls. I just made a donation to the Colorado Mining Association, who every summer take 20-30 K12 teachers from all over the country and they go to mines and take mining education courses for 6 weeks during the summer. This is one example of what we can do to turn the tide. Mining needs to be presented to our public at large as part of our world -- rather than it just showed up. Also -- I really urge our mining industry national conventions to provide a symposium and invite the Anti-mining coalitions (Sierra Club, Defenders of Wildlife to name a couple) -- invite them to present their point of view and to participate in a controlled forum at our national conventions. You aren't alone, Boyd. There are mining people in your community. We have to provide more inofrmation is all.

Best of luck!

Do you think the Wal Mart greeters would have 10,000 carts because that would be formidable indeed. It's not getting into Wal Mart that those people are there for -- it's when you are leaving with your cart piled high full of T.P., dog food, cheap baby clothes, and rubber hosing that they really kick into gear. You are right, Lori -- put the Wal Mart greeters along the border and no flim flam booty is going to escape their x-ray vision.

I just crossed the border myself a couple of days ago and people back home refuse to see me right now because of swine flu. When my eye doctor's receptionist cringed at my presence in her zone this morning she asked me why I would go into such a life threatening situation as visiting Mexico. I told her that the swine flu is not life threatening -- Cholera, TB, Dengue Fever, certain snakes and spiders, teenage boys with AK-47s and jungle guys with machetes are life threatening. The swine flu is -- the flu. Babies and sick people die from the flu every year. Healthy adults consider it an unexpected vacation and a certain way to loose weight really fast.

Thanks for the notes, Lori. Be in touch, OK?

Well, you would think they would have just asked the Wal Mart greeters to volunteer to go. I guess he feared they would be more agressive.

This mule was a favorite steed and very much admired by his elderly owner, who was proud to have such a lovely animal. The mule's reins were on the ground I noticed because I have horses, too. He was an older elegant animal and was trained not to run off. He is actually all dolled up because the rider was attending a funeral and everyone had their finest stuff. You can't see but there is a fence and alot of people were watching as I took the photo.

Thanks for the comment, I apprecaite that you shared. Michele

Hi Maru! Wow, that was a lovely response to read. I wish I could convery to you how wonderful the area and people are there in Tameapa. I wish I could just give you my memories as well. It is a little biut crazy how dangerous people make their lives, that you can't just go there to visit but if you did, they would welcome you and you could visit the cemetary.

thanks for the response. Michele Murray

Hello! I enjoyed your piece on the River Chickens of Tameapa. This is a real discovery for me. My paternal grandfather was born there and I have never visited that place. I was told it is way too dangerous for unknown persons. I hope I can go there someday as well as Higuera de los Monzon, where my paternal grandmother was born. Thank you for your so nice description of the place (in which I have never been) that makes me dream. Where my roots come from.

Sounds like you had fun on your trip to... ummm... Wanna Watt O ;).

I really like the picture of the mule you have there, is he tied to the mufa with the satellite dish? Those things always make me ponder where peoples priorities are. May not have a fridge but have to have the Sky Satellite television. I've seen this in many different countries - I have a few pics of my own that are very similar.
