The club at its finest
It’s that time of year again: The Victor Penguin Hockey Club (a loosely organized community ice rink and hockey team for the local kids in the mining town of Victor, Colorado) is looking for volunteers to fix up their circle of boards and hang irrigation netting for shade before they begin to flood the home-made ice rink. This is a free hockey club that relies on donations from the CC&V gold mine and volunteers to do the work. They provide all the skates, gear, hot dogs and most importantly – something for the kids in town to do. The first email arrived:
We’ve got painting, fixing up, and shade-making projects and we need help on it. This could be the greatest season ever. Sooner we get that stuff done the earlier we can flood. G. Horton Environmental Coordinator AngloGold Ashanti (Colorado) Corp.A couple of days later, the second pathetic email:
Due to overwhelming response ( there was none ) Brian and I are in the process of creating a ” TO DO” list that will be posted in the warming shack. For those that want to work alone or can’t make any scheduled time check out the list and just do it. We can be flooding before Thanksgiving if we git-r-done now. I’m renting the spray gun this weekend and will be painting the boards if anyone wants to help out on that. Let’s get this done so we can get to skating. There’s not a lot to do. G. Horton Environmental Coordinator AngloGold Ashanti (Colorado) Corp.At last, the happier email:
Jeez, groveling pays off! I actually got responses! Here’re the Pressing Penguin Tasks: 1. Wood for heat: we’re going to be using pallet / crates from the mine ( its clean ) so we’ll need a couple of mine trucks to tram from Carlton to the rink. We’ll need a couple of saw-yers to get the stuff cut up. Skill saw works pretty good actually. Last year the wood that we had laying along side the shack got carted off by some non-caring citizen so this stuff has to get cut up. Sounds like a good job for “Jake-Browns-Dad,” (you know the skater, “Formerly-known-as-Tim”) and Jorge “the Bolivian Nightmare” Papich. 2. Moving the bleacher to the north: We need to make more room FOR KIDS along the boards. That will benefit us all. I’m trying to line up the city’s backhoe as the bleacher has grown into the ground. We’ll need some scrap wood ( 2×6 ) to extend the deck unless someone has a better idea. Along with that we need to build some benches. Maybe le travailleur M. Le Focht? 3. The mine donated last year some more conveyor belting. We need to move it around to the warming shack. That will save on everybody’s skates. 4. Always need help on cabling systems and nets. R. “the Hammer” Shutts or A. “I always laugh when I play” Price are the main net menders and wouldn’t mind teaching others their secret skills. 5. Painting is going to be done next week by M. “The Booter” Boutin and family. He’s a pro but we can help him there. 6. Weed-eating is going to be necessary before we flood the rink. 7. Some boards will need repair. Check with D. “Hot Flash” White. If you have some 1/2″ plywood laying around bring it on down. 8. Our stove in the shack is in pretty bad shape and we need to replace it. Anybody have one of similar size? We could maybe buy one from Ace if people want to donate. I think one that size was going for $150 last winter. 9. Get a game going. Somebody bring a street ball and we’ll get the pre-season going. 10. Zamboni tune up. 11. I’ve got a few very large bags of aluminum that need to go down to recycle. It will take a few pickups to get them there and they need to go to a place on East Las Vegas. This recycle company is going to make a donation to us. Preferably mine hands for this one. If you have any other questions call me: Guy Heurteaun at XXX-XXXX or Brian “The Glide” Hayes XXX-XXXX
