"Watch out!"

"Watch out!"

Last night was the annual St. Barbara Commemorative Medal award presented by the Colorado Mining Association. St. Barbara is patron saint of mining. The 2008 recipient of this award is John W. Goth – present director of Mineral Information Institute and Director of the Colorado Mining Educational Foundation (really great organization for the distribution of mining awareness and appreciation), Advisor to the Denver Gold Group and many other important current organizations involved with mining. He is probably most known for his contribution to mining as Sr. Executive VP for Amax – 32 years!

I always enjoy the women at this event. Judy Colgan and her assistant Stacey are pillars for running the CMA events. Through them I have met some other fine women in Colorado mining. This year, I took my mother with me. One of the first people we met was Bence Close, Principal Executive VP with EnviroGroup LTD. He introduced us to a woman who said she might like to come shooting with the rest of us some time. I meet a lot of women in this industry who either enjoy shooting a clay pigeon now and again or are at the least interested in learning how. One of these women — Penny whose husband sells Caterpillar equipment — also wanted to come shooting.
Here is my list of women in mining who like to go shoot shotguns:
1) Me
2) Jilly (pipeline geo married to a metallurgist)
3) Diane (Technical Support for Aurelio Resource)
Four is the minimum number for a pheasant hunting party through Rocky Mtn. Roosters is why I am always looking to fill out a quartet. Last night I was able to come up with another 3. One day, a group of us mining women is going to head east with a bunch of guns and go hunt some birds.

Lane White, editor for Mining Media Services and past editor for Engineering & Mining Journal (I think), pointed out to me a lovely red wine from Australia: ALICE WHITE (go figure why he likes it) and then told me an interesting story about meeting John Goth in Paris some 30 years earlier and the moly-processing business in Europe, etc. Many families in mining relocate and move from country to country much like the military and keep in touch the rest of their lives. Such was the case with Goth and White.

I met some investors, some geologists, some metallurgists, some equipment operators and admired Dan Witkowsky’s Santa tie. There were many Denver Mining Club members present and as always Stuart Sanderson gave an animated and informative speech to introduce John Goth. We watched an engineer slice the Yule log with meticulous care (every year) so as not to squash the stratigraphic layers. My mother and I noted that black velvet seems to be coming back as the latest trend in fashion.

That is my summary report of the 2008 Saint Barbara’s Commemorative Medal Award ceremony for InfoMine’s Social Page.

Michele, just went shooting a few weeks ago at Kiowa Creek Sporting Club. What a great place. It was a lousy showing on my part but had a great time, just need to do it more often, so I can hit more. Thought about asking Santa for a new over under….but the hubby wanted a HDTV instead. Maybe next year.

    Hope you are doing well.

Andrea: I hope to be too busy in mining to go shooting in January, but if I’m not I will get a gaggle of women together to go shoot with YOU! I haven’t been to Kiowa Creek. Maybe we can take a break from digtizing topo at lunch in my office and go see. My huzbun would take a new gun or rod over a TV any day.
