Hi Paul:

On June 19, 2008, regional newspaper, Rocky Mountain news ran an article addressing your question: http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/jun/19/congress-acts-leadville-mine-danger/

Michael Hickman, Lake County Commissioner, is quoted:
"We'll probably get daily updates on that (a drainage pipe installed) as far as how the pumping's going," he said. "We're past the snow runoff. The peak has come and gone, and we haven't had any ramifications from that."

The town is looking for a new crisis until this one can be resurected next spring.

First – I do not know what the Bureau of Rec is intending to do, but a controlled release, (i.e. pumping or some other means of extracting the water), should-could-would keep the discharge on its current course – that is going to the treatment facility before entering the river.

Two things to keep in mind: the water is only partially derived from mine drainage – the source is mostly ground water from snow pack. However, a flood of a billion gallons of fresh Rocky Mountain spring water would still knock out a swath of the community and all the stuff of humans would enter the river as a result. When we have flash flooding, the sediment load is also detrimental to the river habitat.

I don’t know how well I can follow up on this, as the local media really take advantage of the high profile to dramatic proportions you don’t know how much to believe. The State and Feds are now involved. That said, I have to rely on their expertise.

I will see what I can find out….

If even a controlled release will pollute the river, how in the world do you deal with this?

I hope you follow up with info here.
